“Tarangela” is the Spider Woman of the 21st<\/sup> Century.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Angela Hale known by her colleagues as \u201cTarangela\u201d is the real spiderwoman. She has travelled throughout South East Asia in search of the large hairy \u201ccreatures of nightmares\u201d. The Tarantula<\/strong>. Her efforts to find, photograph and record new species have taken her to the steamy jungles of Borneo where she travelled deep into the forests armed with only a camera and a flashlight. In 2010 she found , what she believes, is a species of tarantula new to science. Her expedition in 2009 rediscovered the Earth Tiger tarantula hitherto unknown in the area. She hopes that this amazing discovery will help the local people by attracting more eco-tourists to see this amazing \u201cblue\u201d tarantula. Join her has she crosses rivers, climbs trees and finds some of the most weird and wonderful insects and spiders on the planet. This trip is not for the faint hearted though. The jungle teams with dangerous snakes, poisonous scorpions and the ever present tiger leech!<\/p>\n

Ray and his wife Angela have appeared on a number of TV Programmes including \u201cThe One Show<\/b>\u201d and \u201cMichaela\u2019s Animal Road Trip<\/b>\u201d.<\/p>\n

They have been guests on Children\u2019s TV in programmes such as \u201cSaturday Disney<\/b>\u201d and \u201cProve it<\/b>\u201d as well as making regular appearances on local TV news channels.<\/p>\n

In 1998 Ray wrote and published the book\u00a0An Introduction to the Tarantulas of South East Asia<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1999 Angela was the subject of an RDF documentary on tarantulas and both are regularly consulted on spider stories when reported in the media.<\/p>\n

In 2010 Ray and Angela were involved in the production of a\u00a0Beginners Guide to Keeping Tarantulas\u00a0<\/strong>by Australian TV Presenter Della Golding.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a Celebrity stars screamed in fear of spiders but Angela Hale doesn\u2019t know what all the fuss is about \u2013 she lives with 200 tarantulas in her bedroom. Her semi-detached house in Polegate, near Eastbourne, is home to one of the biggest private collections of the hairy bugs in the world. Postmen approach her home nervously when they deliver the spiders\u2019 favourite takeaway dish. Mrs Hale said: \u201cTarantulas love eating live crickets and I regularly get a box of 500 of them delivered via mail order. You can hear the crickets rubbing their wings together when they arrive and the postmen often ask what the noise is.\u201d Mrs Hale has been bitten just once in the 25 years she has been housing tarantulas in racks of glass tanks from floor to ceiling in her spare room: \u201cI\u2019d been trying to mate without success so I took the male out of the female\u2019s tank using a plastic container but he leapt out and settled on my wrist. \u201cHe sensed my pulse and thought it was a cricket and bit me and then quickly ran up my arm and sat on my head. \u201cThe poison was painful, like a bee sting, but I treated it successfully with antihistamine.\u201d Mrs Hale is secretary of the British Tarantula Society and helps organise the UK\u2019s largest annual show for spiders in Coseley, near Wolverhampton, known as the Crufts of the spider world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love tarantulas and there is nothing else quite like them in the insect world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She can\u2019t remember when her fascination with tarantulas started but her father recently discovered a painting of a tarantula in a jungle scene that she did for GCE \u2018O\u2019 level. Mrs Hale was 21 when she and her health and safety officer husband Ray, both in their 40s, started the collection. They now travel all over the world photographing tarantulas in the wild and searching for new species. Friends who visit their home are aware of the secrets inside the spare bedroom and any arachnophobes among them give the room a wide berth. Mrs Hale said: \u201cI love tarantulas and there is nothing else quite like them in the insect world. Without them we would be inundated with the insects that they eat.\u201d But not everyone shares her fascination. Mrs Hale is secretary to Drusillas Park near Alfriston and she helps organise \u201ccreepy-crawly\u201d exhibition days. She said: \u201cThe children love the spiders and don\u2019t seem to be scared at all but some mothers get frightened. \u201cWe\u2019ve had one or two run out of the room screaming.\u201d<\/p>\n
